The issue of creating and mass-producing modern and affordable subscriber equipment is one of the key issues in the implementation of the Sphere project. At the Satellite Russia conference, Gonets Satellite System JSC (part of Roscosmos State Corporation) highlighted the advantages of a new approach to creating satellite terminals. With him, the operator of the satellite system, after creating prototypes of subscriber devices, does not undertake their mass production, but entrusts it to large manufacturers of communication equipment.
The advantages of the new practice were noted at Satellite Russia by Akim Ivkin, Head of the Department for the Implementation of Federal Projects and Promising Programs of JSC Gonets Satellite System. In his opinion, the task of the operator should include the development of device images, participation in the creation of prototypes and testing. Then, based on the design documentation, the operator conducts a competitive search for a contractor for the serial production of terminals. This sequence ensures the full use of competitive mechanisms and is a generally recognized standard in the world practice of manufacturing satellite terminals. This approach should have a positive effect on the cost of end devices and on their delivery time. He also noted that it is along this path that the creation of subscriber terminals for the Marathon IoT system is already underway. Five prototypes are already being developed at Reshetnev JSC, while Gonets Satellite System JSC is taking part in creating their appearance and subscriber profile.
During the panel discussion, Oleg Himochko, First Deputy General Director of Gonets Satellite System JSC, noted: "About two months ago, Gonets Satellite System JSC was appointed by the decision of Roscosmos as the operator of the communication systems included in the Sphere project. We understand that this is a great responsibility, and that the successful implementation of such a complex project as Sphere requires the most versatile competencies. Therefore, we not only rely on our experience, but are in constant cooperation with key satellite operators, in particular FSUE Kosmicheskaya Svyaz and Gazprom Space Systems JSC. The work is being carried out in several directions at once. Gonets is currently participating in various expert groups working on the appearance of the systems and on the ground complex. Also, together with AGAT Organization JSC, we are currently working on the Operator's business plan."
